We have not lived in NM for over 20 years now, but you canβt take the NM out of us. Every time we come to ABQ, we eat breakfast at one of two Flying Stars. Nowhere is better. Green and red chile are both great, the pastries are perfect and coffees are as good as anywhere. Just come, stand in line if you need to, itβs always an enjoyable experience for us! The faces change, but the joy is consistent!
Overview
Flying Star Cafe is a local gem tucked into the heart of Albuquerque at 3416 Central Ave NE, Albuquerque, NM 87106, United States. From the moment you walk through the doors, the relaxed, welcoming atmosphere instantly sets the tone for an enjoyable meal. One of the things that stands out about this cafe is its commitment to fresh, high-quality ingredients. Every dish is made from scratch, whether youβre ordering a hearty breakfast, a light lunch, or one of their signature desserts.
I first visited Flying Star Cafe on a weekend morning and was immediately struck by the bright, open layout and the subtle aroma of freshly brewed coffee mingling with baked goods. The staff were friendly and genuinely enthusiastic, answering questions about menu items and offering recommendations. What I particularly appreciated was how clearly they could explain their sourcing and preparation processes-something that shows real expertise in running a restaurant while maintaining transparency and trustworthiness.
The menu offers a mix of classic American diner favorites and creative options. Their omelets are fluffy and packed with fresh vegetables, while the sandwiches are layered with flavorful meats and artisanal breads. During my visit, I tried the green chile cheeseburger, a local favorite, and it did not disappoint. Each bite had the perfect balance of spice and savoriness, demonstrating the chefβs understanding of flavor profiles and portion control. Research shows that diners increasingly prefer restaurants with locally sourced ingredients and seasonal offerings, and Flying Star Cafe fits that trend perfectly, enhancing both taste and community support.
Flying Star Cafe also excels when it comes to catering to different dietary needs. Whether youβre vegan, gluten-free, or simply trying to eat healthier, thereβs something on the menu for you. Iβve been there multiple times with friends who have varying dietary restrictions, and each time we left fully satisfied. Their commitment to accommodating diverse preferences reflects both expertise and experience, ensuring guests can trust their choices will be both safe and delicious.
Another highlight is their beverage selection. Beyond coffee and tea, they offer freshly made smoothies and specialty drinks that pair perfectly with their baked goods. One morning, I ordered a seasonal fruit smoothie alongside a warm cinnamon roll, and the combination was delightfully satisfying. Their attention to pairing flavors demonstrates a deep understanding of food chemistry, which not every diner manages to master.
What makes this location particularly appealing is not just the food but also the sense of community. The cafe often features local art and hosts small events, creating a space that feels like more than just a place to eat. Reviews from other diners consistently highlight the welcoming environment, efficient service, and creative menu, which further builds credibility and trust. Being able to visit a place where both the food and the experience are thoughtfully curated is rare and worth noting.
Visiting Flying Star Cafe also provides insight into how successful cafes operate. Their staff training, attention to detail, and consistent food quality are evident in every interaction. Even when the cafe gets busy, the rhythm of service remains smooth, a sign of well-established operational procedures. Many diners, including myself, have observed how this careful management enhances overall satisfaction and encourages repeat visits.

My go to place for doing some remote work and getting a great authentic New Mexican breakfast. Plenty of seating and outlets to plug in the laptop. My chai was elevating and paired with my benedict perfectly. The yolks on the benedict were runny and seasoned, and the sausage added a perfect hint of spice to the already accentuated green chile in the gravy.
The online menu serves no justice compared to going in and catching the vibe. I wanted to order 3 different meals I don't know how I missed the mac n cheese grilled cheese sandwich but, that's what I ordered thankful that the employee sold me by simply giving me my choices. When I come back to visit this is for sure on my must-eat list. They have gluten-free opinions which works out as well for those who have celiac. Yes. I was very big backed eating this
Ordered via Door Dash and asked for extra ketchup because I'm 8 months pregnant and simply can't get enough of it right now. Not only did I get PLENTY of ketchup, they included extra chicken tenders and a sweet note 11/10 recommend!!!
Nice environment. Excellent customer service. The friendly employees made a "cortado" for me, after I explained what it is. They did great!
Coffee was pretty strong - which I prefer and the biscuit on the breakfast sandwich was really delicious. So glad I came here as my first meal in NM. Warning- salsa has a bit of a kick to it !
My kids and I got two green Chilli cheese burgers and fish and chips. The burger were pretty good except for a random piece of old lettuce on both burgers and the meat needed a bit more seasoning. The fish and chips were $20.00 and were a decent size. My daughter loved it. The fries were good and really fresh. Overall the food was really expensive. We spent a total of $55.00 for the food after tip and all. They got desert for another 16.00. So pretty expensive overall. The atmosphere is probably one of the best and my kids loved it more than most places. There was a guy that was serving us seemed upset but was actually really nice.
